TRAUMA & PTSD

What is the difference between PTSD and TRAUMA?

A TRAUMATIC event is time-based, meaning symptoms should not last more than a few days or weeks.

PTSD is often a more long-term condition, which can leave you experiencing negative side effects such as flashbacks for months or years.

All human beings have been through some kind of Trauma. Sometimes it stems from childhood or perhaps from an event in adult years.

When we grow up as an adult, childhood trauma can still be triggered by things that make us feel unsafe, abandoned, or uncomfortable.

If the trauma has not been properly attended to, it can negatively affect our relationships and our ability to enjoy our life’s adventures.

There are three main types of trauma.

  •  Acute – caused by a single incident

  •  Chronic – the result of repeated, prolonged trauma such as abuse

  • Complex – when someone is exposed to multiple different traumatic events

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing threatening and traumatic events such as per example:

  • a car accident

  • physical or sexual assault

  • abuse

  • death of a loved one

  • divorce

  • natural disasters

  • domestic violence

  • bullying

  • rape

  • war

  • … (among other traumatic experiences)

Living in a traumatic atmosphere, seeing someone else being harmed or being directly harmed yourself can all cause trauma.

Being affected by trauma experienced by your family, friends, or community can also affect you.

A person who is suffering from PTSD experiences flashbacks that trigger intense fight or flight responses – creating feelings of anxiety, helplessness or terror.

If left untreated, this often develops into:

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • insomnia

  • alcohol

  • drug abuse,

  • destructive behaviour

Some people could feel emotionally numb and detached from the world and find it impossible to develop relationships and a healthy social life.
